the episode begins with sidle finding an author dead in a stairwell. sidle questions a few local people, including a father, a computer programmer, and a pimp. finally the breakthrough comes when grissom finds some dna from a noose. sidle goes back to the group and finds it was actually a father the whole time, whom they had questioned before. grissom says "I just got lost in thought. It was unfamiliar territory." and the episode fades to black.
