the episode begins with stokes finding a cashier dead in a parking lot. stokes questions a few local people, including an author, a bank teller, and a drug dealer. finally the breakthrough comes when grissom finds some dna from a lead pipe. stokes goes back to the group and finds it was actually an author the whole time, whom they had questioned before. grissom says "He who laughs last thinks slowest." and the episode fades to black.
